WITHDRAWAL OF THE SENSES

Is the withdrawal of the senses from the outside world possible?

We have a complete picture of the outside world thanks to the information collected by the organs of our senses. Our eyes are the biggest “collectors” of information. They are constantly sending information to our brains. Without the organ of sight we would not know what the world looks like.

Our mind is like a clumsy, restless child who wants to be everywhere and at all times. This restlessness is accompanied by a desire, desire or need to see, smell, touch, hear, taste.

Now, just as muscles would not be able to move without command from the brain (even the most modern robotic suit or exoskeleton that moves paralyzed limbs, in order to move them, it must obtain and “read” the motion command from the brain), all our five major human senses would not be able to do their actions without a command coming from our brains.

The activity of our senses can be tamed tame and this is done only by strong willpower.

A strong willpower can make the most clumsy more capable. The fruitful and useful senses withdrawal is much easier for people with a strong mind.

It is All About Freedom of Mind

To pull and isolate the senses from the outside world is not easy for many reasons.

One is that most of the mind is simply “programmed” so that many people generally listen more to someone else’s no than their own. It is much more difficult for many people to make the decision to say themselves no than to dance to someone’s tune.

So it’s all about a firm decision. Nothing is impossible.

Withdrawal of the Senses and Artist

“Oh no. He is lost again. Okay, he’s an artist. ”

Many times you have either heard or spoken these words yourself.

The deep withdrawal of the senses from the outside world many people can experience quite naturally and spontaneously.

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to share space and life with a painter, musician, sculptor, writer, then you certainly know the state of their “absence.” The true creator will start yesterday and “return” (to you) in two or three days, calm and serene.

This kind of absence is a creative absence. Creative absence is an art in itself.

The artist is immersed in his pure creativity. This state of withdrawal of the senses does not mean that he is absent, on the contrary.

The artist at the same time discovers the objects of the senses and witnesses them. The only difference is that the artist’s senses are purified at the highest level of energy.

This state of separation of mind from objects in Yoga is called vairagya and it occurs from the deepest heart.

The Nature and Withdrawal of the Senses

Being in nature and listening to the language of the sea, trees, birds, waterfalls, or watching the stars, sun or moon naturally leads to a state where the senses withdraw. There, without doubt, a man learns the most about his self.

Unlike a social life in which a person mostly is what he or she is not, in nature he does not have this need. And nature doesn’t care about the fullness of the heads that come with it.

Being in nature, the mind has no need to measure, analyze, calculate and evaluate people, contacts, likes or dislikes. Instead, one absorbs what is offered to his eyes, hands and heart.

In nature, man enjoys right there, uncompromisingly and without a doubt.

That enjoyment frees the mind. The freshly created freedom of the mind will then be transferred to daily life and contacts with the world. For this reason, it is important to be in nature.

When you spent time in nature, of course without an insatiable craving for proving and being liked by others, and without noisy people, your head is emptied of vanity and prejudice. There, one learns not to escape from the uncertain scenes of life but to accept the things that are here and now. There are always some options.

Not Just Artists

I made this comparison not because I am an artist myself and/or have shared space with other artistic brains and hands but because the scientific sciences have researched and proved that phenomenon long ago.

Anyone who has reached a state where he feels like a little snail pulling his senses into the cottage without feeling pain or pleasure, has perfected this useful practice of withdrawal the senses from the outside world.

Anyone who in his “creative absence” has succeeded in developing his recognition of the nature of things and truth to the next level, be that person by profession a salesman of anything, a taxman, a doctor or a baker, he has perfected this useful technique of pulling senses or in the language of Yoga, Pratyahara, the withdrawal of basic human senses from the outside world.

Yoga Sutra 2.54:

„When the mind is withdrawn from sense objects, the sense organs also withdraw themselves from their respective objects and thus are said to imitate the mind. This is known as pratyahara.“

withdrawal of the senses

Pratyahara is therefore a conscious withdrawal of basic human senses. It is the technique of a higher life, the life of higher Yoga. It is achieved through exercise, dedication and complete honesty with yourself and the world.

Pratyahara or the withdrawal of the senses is the pure art of life. It is a fully mindfulness and once fully mastered, leads to a deeper opening of the heart.

The withdrawal of the senses is not the invention of man of the new age and high developed technology. The value of this technique of mind was known to man in ancient times.

And, again, as in every sphere of life it is always better to try out all the techniques that lead to a calm spirit and a serene heart.

These techniques, experiences and the results of that experience cannot be imitated or copied.

It is important to make a difference in life, not illusion.
